First CrossFit Competition Prep

Hello Homies! We have some big competitions coming up. Festivus is this next weekend (10/14)  and the Triangle Invitational (10/21) is the following. Please come out to cheer on your fellow WODmates and enjoy the super charged atmosphere of the competition setting!

We really want everyone to come out to support your workout buddies so we are shortening the Saturday schedules to JUST a 9:30 WOD on 10/14 (this Sat) and 10/21 (next Sat).

For many, this will be their first competition and to help make things as smooth as possible the day of I have written out the answer to many common questions below.

What to do the week before:


  2. Eat for recovery-make sure you are fueling your body properly, especially around workouts

  3. Mobilize, a lot

  4. Go hard in your workouts for the first ⅓-½ of the week, then take a rest day and back way off on intensity for the remainder of the week.  My favorite approach is M-W=go 110%, Th=rest day, and Fri=75% intensity.

  5. Practice hitting standards! Squat to depth, get your chin well over the bar in pull ups, lockout elbows and hips to make sure there will be no issues on the day of! Ask a coach or workout buddy to check your movements.

  6. Hydrate more

What to bring:

  • Water, like a whole lot of water
  • Coffee, there will not be any there
  • -Simple to digest food/fuel (banana, protein shake/bar, coconut water, sandwhiches, etc)
  • Folding chair
  • Towel/s
  • Weight belt, wrist wraps, long socks
  • Lifting Shoes & Running shoes (whatever the WODs require)
  • A change of clothes, the clothes you wear will get -very- sweaty

What to expect:

Controlled chaos. Nothing will start on time, your judge will probably suck, your carefully constructed WOD strategy may fall apart, etc. Just roll with it and don’t stress- competitions are and should be fun! Competitions are a chance to really test your limits and to see what you need to work on. It is also a great way to really get your adrenaline pumping, meet a ton of other CrossFitters, and bond with your gym-mates so enjoy it!
