In order to keep that momentum and see some results this year, it’s important to follow some basic rules that can help guide you along the path to checking some items off your list.

Whether it’s fitness goals, organizational aspirations, or financial hopes, make sure you’re reaching your goals with these five tips:

1. Create Attainable Goals

When you sit down to figure out exactly what you want to get done this year, make sure that your dreams are big enough to be beneficial while staying attainable. Maybe your main goal is too big and needs to be broken up over the course of a few years, but don’t set yourself up for failure by creating a list of unrealistic objectives.

2. Make Sure They’re Measurable

Another thing to consider while creating your goals list is whether or not they can be “checked off”. Rather than making vague goals like “lose weight” or “save money”, create goals with specificity like “lose 10 pounds” or “have $3,000 in savings by the end of the year”.

3. Set Reminders

Whether you add reminder notifications to your phone, throw a motivational message to yourself on your mirror, or set up a tracking system you check once a week, it’s important to keep your goals top of mind. Also remember, accountability can come in many different forms!

4. Take Advice From Others

It can be easy to set off on accomplishing your goals by yourself, but why not take the advice of someone who has been there before? Whether it’s a friend who has been in a similar situation or an Instagram account that you find motivating, don’t be afraid to ask people how they got to where you’d like to be.

5. Focus on the “Why?”

Don’t forget the reasons you’ve set your goals at the beginning of the year. If you’d like to get back in shape so that you’ll be able to play and run around with your kids, let that reason motivate you when you’re waking up for a 5 A.M. workout. Write these reasons down to help motivate you through the tough times!
